Tauranga is the most populous city in the Bay of Plenty region, first settled by Europeans in the early 19th century, it was constituted as a city in 1963.
Tauranga is one of New Zealand's main centres for business, international trade, culture, fashion and horticultural science. The Port of Tauranga is New Zealand's largest port in terms of gross export tonnage and is one of New Zealand's fastest growing cities, with a 14 percent increase in population between the 2001 census and the 2006 census.
The earliest known settlers were Mori who arrived in Tauranga from the Takitimu and the Mataatua waka in the 12th century. European traders in flax were active in the Bay of Plenty during the 1830s, some were transient, others married local women and settled permanently. The first permanent trader was James Farrow, who travelled to Tauranga in 1829, obtaining flax fibre for Australian merchants in exchange for muskets and gunpowder.
During the 1820s, Henry Williams travelled to Tauranga from the Bay of Islands to obtain supplies of potatoes, pigs and flax and in 1835 a Church Missionary Society mission station was established at Tauranga by William Wade.
Tauranga has an oceanic or maritime temperate climate. During the summer months the population swells as the holidaymakers descend on the city, especially along the popular white coastal surf beaches from Mount Maunganui to Papamoa.
Is the stop in Tauranga a tender port or does the ship tie up at the berth
Yes, the ships berth at the port, so access to the town is much easier.
Where does the ship actually dock in Tauranga?
The ship comes into the Port of Tauranga, but the berth it uses is actually on the Mount Maunganui side of the harbour. The main city of Tauranga is 4 kilometers away over the harbour bridge.
How long does it take to get to Rotorua?
You need to allow about 75 minutes to get to Rotorua City centre. There are two routes, the Old Tauranga Road is the inland route or you can follow the coast to Te Puke, makes a nice option.
Can I visit Rotorua and Hobbiton in the time the ship is in port?
Yes you can but it will need to be an 8 or 9 hour itinerary to see both locations, basically a triangle route with an hour between each point, so that's three hours driving.
Can I see geothermal sights in Tauranga?
No, the geothermal geysers and mud pools are located in or around Rotorua.
