From Cruise Port: Dunedin
Your half day tour begins when you are met at the main Visitor Terminal building at the port. From there it's a short 15 minute drive into the city of Dunedin, driving along the harbour road with amazing views across the water to the Otago Peninsula.
Once New Zealands largest and wealthiest city, Dunedin's growth in the late 19th century was driven by the gold and wool industries. Nowadays the city showcases the most impressive range of architecture from that era in the country.
With significant links to the early settlers ( many of whom came from Scotland) the city still promotes its Gaelic heritage. You will see all of the main landmarks in the city, starting with the University of Otago - the oldest university in New Zealand. Stunning neo-gothic architecture seen both inside and out can easily be compared to the old world universities of St Andrews and Edinburgh in Scotland.
Next it is a scenic drive up to the Signal Hill Lookout for some stunning views over the city and surrounding region.
Then to Baldwin Street - claimed to be the world's steepest! If you are feeling fit you may want to try the short walk up to the top.
Next is a visit to the picturesque Olveston Gardens. These well maintained gardens are part of the Olveston House estate - one of the cities finest private homes and now a heritage listed building.
After, we venture into the heart of the city centre to the aptly named Octagon. Take in all the stunning architecture such as the First Church, Speight's Brewery and the Dunedin Town Hall. Here the main highlight is a visit New Zealand's most photographed building - Dunedin's grand Railway Station. This architectural masterpiece is the starting point for some great train rides including the world famous Taieri Gorge Railway.
This tour will allow 1 hour of free time in the city for shopping or a taste of the local cafes and restaurants in the Octagon. Afterwards, enjoy a scenic drive onto the Otago Peninsula for a stunning lookout over Dunedin and the Otago Harbour. We will then take you back to the ship at Port Chalmers.
Please note that the duration of the tour may vary depending on the traffic conditions and the size of the group.
