Te Puia Hangi Restaurant Buffet Lunch

Your Hangi lunch is part of a three course buffet meal, served at the brand new Te Puia restaurant overlooking the geothermal valley. Watch from your comfortable seating as the geysers erupt in the distance while enjoying great food.

A hangi is a traditional Maori way of cooking food, done in a pit using heated stones with water or leafy vegetation thrown on top to produce steam.

Wire baskets of food wrapped in foil and muslin cloth are then put on top of the hot stones. The baskets are covered with wet sheets and then wet sacks. All this is then covered over with soil. The water in the sheets and sacks is turned into steam by the hot stones; with the steam trapped under the sacks and soil, the food begins to cook.

The menu uses many traditional ingredients and the courses are:

Soup
Kumara & watercress (V+GF)

Salads
- Mixed lettuce leaf red onion cucumber tomato and condiments (V+GF)
- Grilled cauliflower with lime, avocado oil and horopito (V+GF)
- Marinated mushroom white balsamic smoked sea salt and kawakawa (V+GF)
- Pasta salad with pea & watercress pesto (V)
- Cabbage, watercress and napa kimchi salad (V+GF)
- Shrimp, pineapple and coriander salad (GF)

Carvery
Horopito infused carved roast of the day

Traditional hangi
- Chicken
- Lamb
- Rewana bread stuffing
- Pumpkin and kumara (V+GF)

Buffet
- Garlic and watercress potato bake (V)
- Steamed rice (V+GF)
- Hangi smoked tomato, chickpea & kidney bean makhani (V+GF)
- Pork rib boil up with watercress and cabbage
- Vegetarian fried noodles (V)

Dessert
- Steamed pudding, custard and cream
- New Zealand pavlova with whipped cream and seasonal fruit
- Chocolate dipped cream puffs with rhubarb dust
- Anzac crumbed chocolate mousse
- Kawakawa jelly and coconut panna cotta
- New Zealand ice-cream, blackberries and kawakawa
- Fruit salad
